Breastfeeding is a journey, and like any new journey, it can come with a few worries. Many new mums find themselves wondering, "Am I making enough milk?" But in most cases, your body is doing exactly what it’s meant to.
Let’s talk about low milk supply and what you can really do.
You're Probably Making Enough (How to Really Tell)
First, let's bust a few myths. Having soft breasts (after the first few weeks), feeding frequently, or not getting much milk when you pump are not reliable signs of low supply.
What truly matters are your baby’s signs of growth. Look for these reassurances:
-
Steady Weight Gain: Your baby is following their growth curve.
-
Enough Wet Diapers: 6+ wet diapers every 24 hours (after the first week).
-
Contented Feeds: Your baby seems relatively happy and satisfied after a feed.
If these are in check, you’re doing beautifully, mama.
Feed Often, Not by the Clock (How Your Body Makes Milk)
Your body is incredible. It makes milk based on supply and demand. The more often your baby nurses (or you pump), the more milk your body gets the signal to produce.
This is why it's so important to follow your baby’s cues rather than a strict schedule, especially in the early weeks. Watch for early hunger signs (rooting, hand-sucking, or gentle fussing) as your best guide.
Nourish Yourself to Nurture Your Baby
Every feed takes energy, hydration, and care from you. One of the kindest things you can do for your milk supply is to nourish yourself.
Keep a water bottle nearby at all times. Try to eat wholesome, simple meals. You can also include nourishing milk booster foods popular in Malaysia, like papaya, oats, and dates, to support your journey.
When to Seek Help (You're Never Alone)
Trusting your body is key, but so is trusting your intuition. If your baby is not gaining weight, seems dehydrated, or if feeding ever feels painful, please don't hesitate.
A lactation consultant or your doctor can be a wonderful, supportive resource on your journey. You are never alone in this.
